To ensure a successful transition to solid food, piglets should ideally learn to eat before weaning. This project aims to develop strategies that stimulate early foraging and feeding activities in young suckling piglets and to determine the impact of this early foraging on their behavioural development, microbial colonization and concomitant maturation of the gastrointestinal tract and immune system. It is hypothesized that early foraging will accelerate the behavioural and physiological development of piglets, ensuring a better preparation for the weaning transition, and therefore will reduce weaning-associated problems in piglets.
